squirrel series

i wouldn't go so far as to say i have an obsession with squirrels...but there is something so adorable and sweet about them, they steal my heart. okay...i love squirrels. there, i said it.

whenever i go out to sell my artwork in union square park, i bring nuts with me (in the summer i also bring water for them). i know it's illegal to feed the squirrels in the park because it's changing their behavior and upsetting the ecological system and blah blah blah but these squirrels live in the middle of manhattan, not in a lush forest where food is plenty year-round! and as for changing their behavior, it would have changed whether people feed them or not because thousands of people walk through that park every day so the squirrels have become very accustomed to being around people. isn't that in itself upsetting the ecological system? should we segregate people from squirrels so they don't become used to being around us?

so as not to break the law, i put a pile of nuts on the ground and let them steal from me. and okay...i confess that on occasion i do hand them a nut (or two) but please don't report me to the authorities.

a few squirrel facts
it is a myth that they have rabies! in actuality, it's very rare for a squirrel to contract rabies. the only thing you have to be careful of if you get bitten is tetanus because the squirrels are always digging and burying in the dirt, where the bacteria live.

warning!
you should not try to touch or pet squirrels in the park and you shouldn't put your hand out and pretend you have food so it comes closer to you! do YOU like being teased? in my opinion, anyone who does that is just asking for trouble. at that point, if the squirrel doesn't bite you it should at least be permitted to slap you across the head.
